Summer Institutes
Every summer, the Southwest Colorado Education Collaborative organizes a range of summer institutes, uniting students and industry experts in immersive career exploration through hands-on engagements and impactful discussions about their future prospects. These programs not only come at no cost to participants but also offer a stipend of $250 upon successful completion of the institutes.

Behind the Drywall: May 27 - 30, 2025
Behind the Drywall is a dynamic summer institute tailored for high school students seeking hands-on experience and insight into the world of HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Welding, and Heavy Machinery industries. Designed to spark curiosity and ignite passion for trades-based careers, this immersive program offers a comprehensive exploration of these vital sectors. Throughout the institute, participants engage in a series of interactive workshops, practical demonstrations, and field trips, providing them with a holistic understanding of each discipline.
In addition to hands-on training, Behind the Drywall also features guest lectures from industry professionals, career panels, and construction site visits. These experiences allow students to interact with experts in the field, gain valuable insights into career pathways, and explore potential job opportunities.

Health Careers Institute (HCI): June 9-12, 2025
The Health Careers Institute (HCI) is an immersive summer program designed for high school students interested in exploring career opportunities in healthcare and related fields. This hands-on, interactive institute introduces students to the diverse pathways within the healthcare sector, equips them with foundational skills, and connects them with professionals, educators, and peers who share their passion for making a difference in the community.
The Health Careers Institute empowers students to take the first steps toward a meaningful and impactful career in the healthcare industry, addressing the growing need for skilled professionals in Southwest Colorado and beyond.

Environmental Careers Institute (ECI) - June 9-12, 2025
The Environmental Careers Institute (ECI) is a hands-on summer program for high school students to explore career opportunities in sustainability, agriculture, outdoor recreation, and ecology. Set in the stunning landscapes of Southwest Colorado, the institute provides an immersive experience where students learn about environmental pathways while developing practical skills and building connections with professionals, educators, and peers.
The institute leverages the region's unique environment—mountain forests, rivers, agricultural valleys, and vibrant communities—to create an engaging and authentic learning experience. Students leave with a deep understanding of how to turn their passion for the environment into impactful careers that benefit their communities and the planet.

Beyond the Line: June 16- August 15
Beyond the Line Summer Institute is a new program for SWCEC, made possible in partnership with the Colorado Restaurant Association and Manna. This program is an entry level training program that will provide high school students with hands-on job culinary experiences in local restaurants, allowing them to explore career opportunities in the hospitality and culinary industries, and gain critical employability skills .
The program is designed to bridge the gap between education and industry by offering students real-world exposure to restaurant operations, customer service, food safety practices, and basic culinary skills, alongside critical skills such as communication and team work.
