"Futures Fair Sparks Career and College Aspirations for Hundreds of Students"

Durango, CO – More than 400 students took a step toward their futures at this year’s Futures Fair, where they engaged with 78 businesses, organizations, and colleges to explore career pathways and opportunities. Held at the La Plata County Fairgrounds and Event Center, the event provided hands-on career experiences, valuable networking opportunities, and inspiring conversations with industry professionals across multiple sectors. Schools in attendance included Miller Middle School, Durango High School, Big Picture High School, Silverton High School, Bayfield High School, and Ignacio High School.

The Futures Fair is designed to empower students with the knowledge and connections needed to make informed decisions about their futures. From interactive exhibits to one-on-one discussions with industry experts, students gained real-world insights into potential career paths. The event was hosted by the Southwest Colorado Education Collaborative, a non-profit organization that works to create equitable access to career-connected learning opportunities for students across the region. The Collaborative partners with schools, industry, and higher education to ensure that students are equipped with the skills and experiences necessary to thrive in their future career pathway.

“This event is a powerful reminder of the breadth of our regional community and endless opportunities ahead for our students,” said Jenna Mulligan, Career and College Coordinator. “We are incredibly grateful to our partners for investing in the next generation and to the students who showed up with curiosity and enthusiasm.”

The event was made possible through the generous support of our sponsors. A special thank you to our Silver Level Sponsors—Durango Urgent Care, FCI Constructors Inc., La Plata Electric Association, and Clearnetworx—as well as our Bronze Level Sponsors—Express Employment Professionals and ERO Resources Corporation. Additionally, we appreciate our Coffee Sponsor, Desert Sun Coffee Roasters, for keeping attendees energized throughout the morning and to the La Plata County Fairgrounds for hosting this impactful program.

The Futures Fair continues to serve as a bridge between education and industry, ensuring that students have access to the tools and connections they need to thrive in the workforce.
